Premillennial

Premillennial is the term attributed to the eschatological (end times) framework that holds to a literal 1000-year reign of Christ. It is the belief that Jesus will physically return to the Earth (the Second Coming) before the Millennium era.

Premillennialism is based upon the interpretation of Revelation 20:1–6, which describes Jesus's reign on Earth for a period of a thousand years.

Historically, Irenaeus, the late 2nd-century Bishop of Lyon, was a staunch proponent of premillennialism. He wrote a series of volumes which addressed the false doctrines that were infiltrating the church as the Gnostic movement sought to add pressure on the church to move away from the teachings of the Apostles

Part of that work is dedicated to eschatology, where Irenaeus defends the premillennial view of a future earthly kingdom as the fulfilment of God's promise to Abraham. He writes:

"The promise remains steadfast... God promised him the inheritance of the land. Yet, Abraham did not receive it during all the time of his journey there. Accordingly, it must be that Abraham, together with his seed (that is, those who fear God and believe in Him), will receive it at the resurrection of the just." (Against Heresies 5.32)
