Whosoever has divided the church for centuries, the greatest contention comes in John 3:16. John uses the word to express the desire of God, that whosoever believes will not perish but will have everlasting life.
The contention comes because of those who think that the word limits the types of people that can come to God, saying that it should read "the one who believes will not perish, but have everlasting life."
This is a distinction without a difference. It does not change the meaning of the text whosoever, and it undermines the intent of other scriptures, which speak of God's desire for all people to be saved, and that all should come to repentance.
